Nicholas is a London based photographer, originally from South Africa. He has been enjoying photography as his side-gig for the last few years.
How did you get started in photography?
Born into a family full of photography enthusiasts, there was always a camera being passed around (ending in my hands) at massive Greek family lunches, weddings, christenings and events. My passion was born – and followed me into all of my other interests: taking photos of my basketball team, and eventually boxing competitions. Being born in South Africa, I was inspired to take photos in a culturally diverse, complicated political and social environment. Having done some work for some local organisations, I developed an interest in taking portraits of many people from diverse backgrounds. My love for photography has grown and continues to grow over time.
What has been the highlight of your photography career so far?
Puresweat (Adidas) photoshoot at the Nike Regal Basketball Courts Several events (proposals, christenings, and couple photos) Being asked to exhibit my street photography at several galleries (events yet to be finalised)
What is your favourite image from your work?
Tell us why this image is your favourite:
My friend asked me to shoot some portraits of him in his favourite environment – the West 4th Street basketball court in New York. I flew up for the weekend to do several portraits for him. Besides the excitement of shooting on ‘holy ground’, the portrait of my friend/subject in black and white blends in incredibly with the activity in the background. I also think that the confidence/body language of the subject speaks for itself. The positioning of the subject and his external gaze give the image a ‘larger’ feeling.
If you could photograph anyone in the world who would you shoot?
This question is a bit hit and miss for me. I would love to shoot with anyone new, in ‘their’ environment. Capturing natural portraits of people in a space that they are comfortable with, excites me. That being said: I would love to have taken portraits with Nelson Mandela because of his impact on my life and country.
If you could do a shoot anywhere in the world, where would you shoot?
Streets of Tokyo
What can customers expect from a photoshoot with you?
You can expect me to be professional about my process. You can expect to be involved in ‘creating’ your shoot – including the ideas you want to bear into fruition, the location you would like to shoot. I will make you/the subject feel comfortable enough to be natural in front of the camera.
What is your favourite thing about being on The Shoot?
The exposure I have to learn from and meet new people and clients who have the flexibility to bring their own ideas to life through The Shoot. It enables me to grow my portfolio with projects that are special/of value to clients on the other end of this keyboard.
